Academic Program Proposals

The Kansas Board of Regents and the University of Kansas have established specific procedures by which proposals for new academic programming are created, developed, and submitted for both University and Board approval.

The several types of academic programming proposals require various levels of vetting and approval. For example, new degree programs require approval of the Provost, the Council of Chief Academic Officers, the Council of Presidents, and the Board of Regents. New graduate degrees follow a different path to approval than do new undergraduate degrees. And some academic program proposals, such as a new track in an existing degree program, require only the approval of the Provost.

The following two sections identify, by level and by type of proposal, the specific, step-by-step process for approval of those academic program proposals most frequently initiated at KU. A third section, “Other Proposal Types,” provides process information on those types of academic program proposals not frequently initiated at KU.

Take a few moments to read through the entire approval process narrative to familiarize yourself with the steps, the contacts, the required documents, and the approximate time required to reach proposal approval.

Note: Electronic submission (e-mail) must be used for submitting and distributing all proposal documents.
