Handbook for Faculty and Other Unclassified Staff – 1998

Preface

This Handbook is a reference for some of the most important policies and related information affecting your employment and professional activities on the Lawrence campus. Many of these policies and others are published in other sources, including the Policy and Procedures Manual of the Board of Regents, the University Senate Code, University Senate Rules and Regulations, Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations, the Business Procedures Manual, Guidelines for University Events and Registered Organizations, the "Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Policies" and other publications from the Equal Opportunity Office, the Timetable of Classes, the Graduate School Catalog, the Undergraduate Catalog, the School of Law catalog, and the Datebook and Student Handbook. Where other sources are directly cited in this Handbook, citations are indented and appear in arial typeface.

The University reserves the right to expand upon, alter, amend, or delete any provisions contained herein as may be deemed necessary or appropriate by the administration. Accordingly, the policies described in this Handbook are not intended to create a contract between the University of Kansas and its employees.

Handbook revisions are coordinated by the Provost, with the assistance of the University Senate Executive Committee and others. Proposals for changes in or additions to the Handbook should be made to SenEx, the Provost, the Unclassified Professional Staff Association, or a vice chancellor or university director.

For the first time, the Handbook is available on-line through KU-FACTS under the Faculty and Staff Services feature. The on-line version will be updated by the Office of the Provost as policy changes are approved and will be considered the official version at any given time. Information about access to KU-FACTS is available through the Computer Center.

Because it now is possible to incorporate policy changes and additions promptly upon approval, the need for major revisions of the Handbook is greatly reduced. Any proposed revisions, additions and deletions will be reviewed, as appropriate, by SenEx and administrative offices. Changes in policies and procedures will be made only after their adoption through necessary channels: the University Senate, the Provost, the Chancellor and, if necessary, the Board of Regents or the Legislature. They are effective upon adoption and will be included promptly in the on-line Handbook and incorporated in the next print edition.
