Oversight responsibilities for GTA and GRA appointments

Colleagues

During FY 09, we have successfully implemented a change in the oversight of GTA and GRA appointments. Graduate Studies, under the leadership of Dean Sara Rosen, has served as the Provost’s designee for GTA and GRA appointments in professional schools. The College of Liberal Arts and Science, under the leadership of Dean Joseph Steinmetz, has taken responsibility for the oversight of its GTA and GRA appointments. Graduate Studies and the College have coordinated closely to ensure uniform practices with regard to the GTA Memorandum of Agreement. This oversight plan will continue in the future until further notice.

As soon as the current round of annual GTA and GRA policy-related updates have been completed by staff in the Office of the Provost, Graduate Studies will assume the responsibility for this future annual updates. Similarly, any policy questions or approvals that have been directed to the Office of the Provost should in the future be directed to the appropriate administrative unit, either Graduate Studies or the College. Graduate Studies and the College, working with the Budget Office, are authorized to resolve questions that may emerge related to graduate student eligibility for GTA and GRA appointments. Graduate Studies and the College consult with Human Resources and Equal Opportunity for questions related to the GTA Memorandum of Agreement. All policies related to GTA and GRA appointments may be found in the Policy Library. The current “Resources for GRAs/GTAs” on the Office of the Provost website will soon migrate to the Graduate Studies website, and you will receive notification from Dean Sara Rosen when this change has been effected. Graduate Studies has assumed the responsibility for providing mandatory university-wide training for all new GTAs and will monitor participation in this training for new GTAs in professional schools. I thank you for your cooperation in making the transition to this new system a success.

Sincerely,

Richard W. Lariviere
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
