The Inclement Weather Policy is a personnel policy that permits employees to arrive late to work or to leave work early when snow or other inclement weather conditions impede travel. Detailed information about the procedures is included in section 1.
Procedures for canceling classes or curtailing other campus operations on the Lawrence campus are described in section 2.
Because class schedules and the student population at the Edwards Campus differ from those on the Lawrence campus, and because weather conditions in other parts of the state may vary from those in Lawrence, decisions to cancel classes or curtail other operations at the Edwards Campus and other University offices outside of Lawrence are made independently. See section 3.
The KU Lawrence campus libraries, including the Law Library, have developed policies for determining the libraries’ schedules during severe weather. See section 4.
Though it is rarely necessary to close the Lawrence Campus, the Edwards campus, or other KU locations, procedures for doing so are outlined in section 5.
The personnel procedures that are in effect for inclement weather and for University closings are summarized in section 6. Please note that even during inclement weather or University closings some essential services must be provided. Administrators must determine emergency staffing requirements and designate “emergency staff” in advance. Unit administrators are asked to review their lists of positions or functions that have been designated as “emergency staff” and submit them to Human Resources and Equal Opportunity (hrdept@ku.edu) by Friday, December 12, 2008.
General questions about these policies and procedures should be directed to the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (785-864-9600 or policy@ku.edu); questions about related personnel policies should be directed to Human Resources and Equal Opportunity (785-864-4946 or hrdept@ku.edu).
