Restructuring Graduate Studies

Dear Colleagues:

When Diana Carlin announced that she was stepping down as Dean of the Graduate School and International Programs to accept a position with the Council of Graduate Schools in Washington, D. C., I appointed a Graduate Studies Restructuring Committee with the following charge:

“The goal for this committee is to recommend a structure that will better align graduate studies with research at KU while preserving the advances that have been made in establishing lines of communication among the students, faculty, and administrators who are the primary stakeholders in graduate education.”

The Committee's report is attached to this message.

To summarize, the KU Vice Provost for Research will assume the title of Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies to provide a unified voice for graduate education and research on the Lawrence Campus. An Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies will report to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies. The Graduate School will become Graduate Studies, and will remain in Strong Hall, but will be separated administratively and physically from International Programs.

Vice Provost Jim Roberts will be advertising for the Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies to be selected from within the current KU faculty with the rank of Professor. I encourage you to apply or to nominate qualified candidates.

Sincerely,

Richard W. Lariviere
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
