Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Jeffrey S. Vitter is the chief operations and academic officer on the Lawrence and Edwards Campuses. The Provost is primarily responsible for advancing the mission of the University in conjunction with the Chancellor, administrators, faculty, staff, and students. He oversees all academic, research and public service units. In addition, the Provost is responsible for academic and administrative policies and goals, acting through the vice provosts and deans in cooperation with University Governance.

The Vice Provost for Administration & Finance is responsible for managing the budget and other fiscal affairs of the Lawrence campus, and oversees Budget Management and Fiscal Services, the Office of the Comptroller, Purchasing, Information Technology, Human Resources and Equal Opportunity, the KU Card Center, Facilities Operations, Design and Construction Management, Parking and Transit, Public Safety, Environment, Health and Safety, the Center for Sustainability, and the Office of Space Management.

Diane is currently the Vice Provost for Administration & Finance for the Lawrence Campus of the University of Kansas. Prior to becoming the Vice Provost for Administration and Finance in November 2008 she was the Associate Vice Provost/Comptroller for the Lawrence Campus of The University of Kansas. As Comptroller since 1998 her principal responsibility included maintaining institutional fiscal integrity and accountability. She has also served as Acting Budget Director, the Director of Purchasing and as Associate Comptroller at the University of Kansas. From 1984 – 1991 Diane was Associate Director at the Kansas Geological Survey.

Prior to coming to the University of Kansas she was the Chief Accountant/Controller at Yale University Health Services, New Haven, Connecticut. She also served as Business Manager for the Yale University Art Gallery in the early 1980's. Diane received her Bachelors in Economics in 1977 from Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT, and her MBA from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS in 1990.

Diane lives in Lawrence with her husband Steve, 3 daughters, 7 Arabian horses, 1 Donkey, 2 dogs, and 3 barn cats.

The Vice Provost for Faculty Development has primary responsibilities for faculty policy issues, faculty evaluation, and faculty and administrator development initiatives, and direct oversight of the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Spencer Museum of Art, and the Lied Center.

Dr. Mary Lee Hummert (Ph.D., University of Kansas, 1987) is Vice Provost for Faculty Development, Professor of Communication Studies, and on the faculty of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in Gerontology. She joined the Provost's Office in September, 2006, and previously served as Associate Vice Provost for Research. Key responsibilities in her current position include administration of faculty programs and policies, such as new faculty orientation, the promotion and tenure process, sabbatical leave, etc. In addition, she coordinates development programs for department chairs/program directors and serves as the liaison in the Provost's office for the Ombuds Office, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business, Fine Arts, Journalism, Law, and Social Welfare. Dr. Hummert's research examines the social cognitive processes linking age stereotypes and communication. She has published extensively in communication, psychology, and gerontology journals, and is the co-editor of two books on communication and aging.

The Office of the Provost has the administrative and operational responsibility for the Lawrence and Edwards campuses including academic and student programs and business operations. The office is responsible for the formulation and implementation of academic and administrative policies and goals working in concert with the vice provosts and deans and in cooperation with University Governance. The Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs reports to the Provost and coordinates various academic programs to enhance and support the academic mission.

Areas of responsibility for this position include the following:

  • Work with the academic deans and facilitate communication and interaction with the Office of the Provost
  • Supervising unit directors of Privacy Office, KU Continuing Education, International Programs, Center for Service Learning, and other academic unit directors as assigned by the Provost
  • Servingon committees and assist in the development and administration of various policies and budgets affecting the entire campus as assigned by the Provost
  • Development and tracking of performance indicators, establishment of goals, and reporting to Kansas Board of Regents
  • Academic program approval and review for Kansas Board of Regents including community college articulation agreements and out-of-district course approvals
  • Development of successful assessment mechanisms and accreditation
  • Supervision of assistants to the provost for academic affairs
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the provost

The vice provost for diversity and equity at the University of Kansas will be a new position (applications due April 25) reporting to the provost with primary focus on the recruitment, retention, and development of under-represented faculty, staff, and students, as well as on the overall climate of diversity and equity at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses. The university is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty, staff, and students, to retaining those currently here, and to assisting in their professional development.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • University leadership and planning oversight for diversity and equity;
  • Fostering a supportive university climate for faculty, staff, and students that values and actively supports inclusiveness and diversity;
  • Development of active links with the external community and alumni groups in support of campus diversity and equity;
  • Coordination of the efforts of the various diversity and multicultural initiatives;
  • Development of evaluation methods and implementation of systems of accountability to promote diversity programs and plans;
  • Close work with vice provosts, deans, directors, chairs, and HREO to recruit, retain, and develop under-represented faculty, staff, and students;
  • Advising the provost and chancellor on matters involving diversity and equity;
  • Other duties as assigned by the provost.

Fred is the Vice Provost for Diversity & Equity. He is a native Nebraskan (not a Husker fan) who grew up in a small town in western Nebraska. A longtime faculty member in the School of Education, he continues to teach while serving in his administrative role. Fred has contributed in a variety of capacities at KU. In the School of Education, he was the founding director of the Professional Development Schools (PDS) Alliance, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education for 4 years, and interim Dean of the School of Education for one year. Fred teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in multicultural/equity education and has been recognized for his teaching with several awards--at both the school and university levels.

Fred was the inaugural director of the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) and held that position for four years. He is also currently the Executive Director of the Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) at KU, which involves eleven academic programs.

Fred and his wife, Mary, have two children who both received their bachelor's and master's degrees from KU. Son Nathan resides in Denver, CO, and daughter Jessica and her husband, Jake, live in Lawrence. Fred and Mary are the proud grandparents of Jack who was born in May 2009.
